Day 4: Toledo
Day 4: Toledo
Quote of the day:
But do people living in Toledo
Know that their name hasn’t travelled very well
And does anybody in Ohio
Dream of that Spanish Citadel?
Weather: Another perfect day, including snacks and wine on the deck
Pics: In and around Toledo, work by artists that DB and THB collect (Adams, Ford, Bean, Wunderlich, White, Snipes), and architects/artists
Fitness center, cereal and fruit, included. On the bus at 9am, around an hour to Toledo, no traffic of course. Some of you with excellent memories might remember the blog entry of THB’s trip to Toledo almost two years ago. If you forgot and would like to take a quick refresher course, or you would just like to read a recap of the Pirates-Cubs game that night:

We repeat the Glass Pavilion, this time with the Curator, Jutta Page, leading the group. She’s a fount of information, and the group benefits from individual questions. Around noon, we sidle across the street to the Toledo Museum for lunch in the café (salad, wrap and drinks, included) and a speed tour by THB (DB is rounding up the tour for a quick exit on the bus). This time around, we know that the Pavilion architects are also artists and DB saw a tremendous installation of theirs in Teshima (we hope to go back to Japan in 2013). Several of the tour members were also on the Japan trip that DB lead late last year and enjoy making the connection.
Then bang-bang-bang, we visit three collections (one we saw in Toledo two years ago), all fascinating. At the last of the visits, turns out the owner (Sara Jane Dehoff) is also a member of Art Jewelry Forum and she and DB have many overlaps though they have not met before, and Sara Jane collects several artists we also own and both know. In addition, we get to relax on her deck afterwards with snacks and chardonnay. A great afternoon!
An hour back in the bus, then we (just the two of us, a pleasant interlude) have dinner in 24 Grille, in the hotel (though not part of the hotel): salads, pork tenderloin for THB, veggie sides for DB, wine and brewski, $84. The smallest main course plate ever served for THB, even the waiter wasn’t wild about it (DB got a bigger plate to replate her veggie sides on than THB got), and we chat up the manager, a woman who lived in the East Bay for quite a few years, on the state of Detroit. Just to add to the woes here, there aren’t enough rental units downtown, though if ya wanna buy, the prices are right.
And, for the bonus round, two of the collectors own work by a DB/THB artist, and THB was in the movies. As a refresher, you can check this out in a past posting and then compare to the pictures alongside this posting
