Day 6: London
QOTD: Don’t forget to
get a picture of the people eating outdoors
This guy is suffering from sun stupor (and too much bubbly) |
Weather:
Brit
#1: one our local friends described the weather as sunny, brisk and
uplifting
Brit
#2: Fresh
Evening
Standard: the Beast from the
East, the nickname for bitterly cold air from Siberia, forecast to envelope the
country and bring significant and disruptive snowfall
THB:
tolerable in the sun, pretty cold in the shade, really cold in the shade with
the wind in your face and scared to death our flight on Tuesday (at best) will
need de-icing or be cancelled (better?) and we get to spend the night in the
Hoof House!
THB
gets a decent night’s sleep, and makes coffee and warms up Hot Cross Buns from
Gail’s for breakfast. Buns excellent, coffee decent.
The artist explaining her work to the other three |
The outfit of the week |
Back
to Collect with MB and DB, a short walk away on a bright and cold London morn. A
bit easier to see the work as the crowd today is about half the size of opening
night. No purchases the second time through either. THB is done a bit before
the others, sits in the café nursing a decaf Americano, $4.50.
Brittany cider |
Lunch
at a brasserie, Cote, just around the corner from the Saatchi gallery. Lots of
Collect people there as well. Half-chicken
(small, maybe half the size of the roast chicken at Harrods) with mushroom
sauce and frites for THB, moules avec frites for DB, similar for DBl and MB;
olives and a few slices of baguette, tea, lemonade, glass of red, bottle of
cider, $55 per couple.
Rococo is the name of the store, so this is a house brand bar |
MB
and DBl head back to Collect, THB and DB back to the apartment, stopping along
the way for an Ottolenghi brownie, milk and a couple of 70% chocolate bars
(granddaughter Kate has gone home or we would have to hide the bars).
Lots
of resting up in the afternoon and dinner of leftovers (in Brit-talk?): great
Neal’s Yard cheeses, two types of country loaf toast, two types of olives, two
types of chicken, 3 salads, griddled oat cakes with honey/jam/cheese/butter
combo, red and white wine, and anything not finished (other than cheese and olives)
is put in the bin as we’re dining out tomorrow and leaving the apartment Tuesday
morning (Beast from the East willing).
Dessert
of ginger cookies covered in chocolate. Somehow Kate missed these when she was visiting
the apartment.
