Days 3 - 5: Maui

Days 3 - 5: Maui

Day 3: Honolulu to Kapalua

Weather: Breezy, blue water, low 80s, not overly humid

Up early to meet at the airport. Uber with tip is $28 from hotel to airport. K&E&C&J are just unloading when we pull up

it's important to hydrate before going thru security

A very helpful HA person navigates the giant set up of kiosks for THB, boarding passes and luggage  tags printed out with no malfunctions.

Grandma's hat almost fits

We're a couple of hours early, plenty of time for the twins to roam the empty boarding gate area, sometimes with DB making laps while pushing one or two twins in the stroller. Everyone is doing well enough that we miss the early early boarding announcement. 25 minutes of air time and we're on Maui. E & LB go off to rent cars and when they get back we do a max mix of people and bags. DB and E go off in the sedan for groceries and THB gets to ride in the 7 seater van to the condo in Kapalua with two generations of female offspring.

Two are left to watch the bags (or to catch-up on our sleep, instructions ambiguous as to what our primary responsibilities are)

reheated Leoda's pies (only two survived the initial onslaught) are actually better than fresh from Leoda's ovens

The view from the deck, living room, and master bedroom

Short stop at Leoda's for hand-held pies (mainland popovers) which seemed to have more gummy sauce than fillings of corn, mushrooms and carnitas and two dessert pies....sweet! $90 for 12, and a few of the savory are eaten en route.

We're in 5301, in a condo complex attached to the Montage Hotel (formerly a Ritz-Carlton). The condo, "Jasmine", is an identical layout to the one 5 of us stayed in 4 years ago (an eon ago: pre-twins).  It is lovely, extremely large, and fairly sound proof if twins are fussing before and after awakening.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner on the deck.

Takes THB no time to settle in, as he fumbles with the following:
  • oven (chicken inadvertently done 3 ways: bake, slow bake, convection)
  • TV doesn't come on (looks like one universal remote and 4 individual remotes, just like at the beach house and E-ville)
  • overloaded outlets in the master bedroom tripping the circuit breaker
  • a struggle in finding dish towels and oven mitts
  • apparently there are only 4 cloth napkins
  • splashing water from the fridge ice dispenser all over the floor
  • inability to set the clock in bedroom (even when power restored)
  • can't see the fine print on the wall control of the master bedroom overhead fan
Welcome to paradise!

Two sets of daughters, an "awwwww" moment for THB

Something is wrong

Hmmmmm...can't quite figure out the problem

The owners manual sez to call in a specialist

Dinner on the deck (literally, some of the dinner is on the deck, expecting dogs to handle what falls off the trays)

 Nightcap

Dinner on the deck. THB sets the table for 6 and two highchairs. Later LB points out there  are only 5 adults. Chicken (with enough leftovers for lunches), mini potatoes (with leftovers for whenever), salad, tofu, and a glass of Colome malbec.

Day 4: Kapalua

Can we see our future heading to the beach

Another parent taking the kids to the beach?

Weather: Breezy, blue water, low 80s, not overly humid

Twins seemed to be back on schedule, up around 5 and cheerful (and thus adorable). Pre-breakfast snorkel with LB, THB using DB's mask and fins. Grape Nuts with berries, cantaloupe, coffee and toast.  Post-breakfast snorkel with DB using rental mask and fins....aaaah, works fine!

Lunch on the deck: the last of hand-held pies, chicken quesadillas (one without chicken), salsa, chips, guacamole, make-it-yourself Arnie Palmers.

The younger crowd goes off to the big pool (more shade) and THB and DB work on an arts and crafts project (soooooo senior living). Later, THB, DB and LB do a late afternoon snorkel.

The girls get their first "feet in the ocean" and the report is in: they loved it. Phew!

Dinner is pork ribs, potatoes that never seem to get done, salad, tofu, wine and water. The twins get something much different: sweet potatoes, peas, cucumbers and peanut butter on whole wheat with the crusts removed.

Day 5: Kapalua

Weather: Same-same except intermittent rain, hard at times

Twins get there second beach event, with surf rolling up on to them nestled between mom and aunts' thighs.

Mother and daughters

DB and THB a safe distance from the softly rising tide

THB takes a day off from snorkeling. Pool time with K&C&J in the afternoon.

Around 5pm we pack everyone up and use the cars to get to the other side of the Montage (i.e., not very far) to meet up with a local photographer, Amanda, for family photos. At 5:30 we're heading down to the beach to where another photo shoot is in session:

We're in the process of taking the first set of pics when the rain starts...and intensifies....and then is coming down so hard we quickly agree to a raincheck for tomorrow late afternoon. The twins get dinner, DB, LB and THB snack on miscellani and have drinks and a brewski; and K&E get the twins fed and put to bed and then have dinner in the hotel bar. The place is empty (hotel and condos) so they pretty much have the bar to themselves.

Opening and closing a door provides much twin amsuement

A few of THB's shots from the rained out photo session:

The cloud is much darker just to the north

It's sunny when we hit the beach
