Days 4: Singapore
|
YT(2) and DB and THB |
Quote of the Day:
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Weather: Hot, humid, rain, torrential downpour
THB starts in the FC, then has his first
breakfast (congee with bacon, decaf, bread) without butter (totally frozen, prestigious
4th floor lounge attendant never brings defrosted version), and then
he and DB meet up with YT and YT at their hotel for a second breakfast: French toast
with yogurt and fruit for THB, eggs and toast for DB.
YT and YT make a special trip to
Singapore for a meet-up. We’ve done short visits in SF, Milan, Tokyo (their
home), Venice, and we met on Easter Island. They are so dedicated to travel
that last year YT was honored by Leading Hotels of the World as their “most
frequent” awardee (THB and DB do not normally stay at the same hotels that YT
does).

Almost all the work is video or slides, only one exhibit had any "traditional" 2 and 3D work |
|
"Typical" work at Gillman Barracks |
|
typical transportation mode |
After breakfast, THB and DB taxi to
LaSalle College ($6) and Gillman Barracks ($8, some rain along with heat) to
see Biennial and gallery art. Not much of note. Taxi back ($12) to Parkview Museum
where we hit the jackpot (the museum has been closed the last two days): a
terrific exhibit called Disturbing Narratives.

A short walk afterwards to Lei Garden
for dim sum with YT and YT.
It’s an inspired choice as we each order dishes and
share. We treat, $120 for four, almost exactly what it would cost in E-ville
and every bit as good or better. By paying in Singapore $, we used up almost
all our cash (good thing, we’re leaving tomorrow afternoon).
|
YT negotiates the "greens" dish and after much discussion of what Lea Gardens has or doesn't have we end up with a dish we have never had: terrific |
|
Unusual dumpling |
|
Another unusual dumpling, comes with an oyster on top |
Say our goodbyes and, as we’re walking
the short distance back to our hotel, we get caught in a torrential downpour.
Total soaking in less than 500 yards even with jacket and hat for THB and umbrella
for DB. Wring clothes out and then apply the in-room iron. In between wringing
and ironing, THB falls into a deep slumber, sleeping through phone calls. Jet
lag appears to be still with THB even on day 4. Very unusual, maybe his mild
cold is to blame?
|
When drenched THB changed into his kayaking outfit, which would've been more appropriate for the last part of the walk back to the Fulleron |
Around 6pm, CYS and SAS arrive. They are
several hours later than their planned arrival due to flight delays caused by
weather in Chengdu (the airport that notoriously made THB and DB “enter” the China and get a temporary visa because our flight landed at a different
terminal than the one we were departing from). Given coronavirus worries, if they had to enter and then leave China, they might have been quarantined there!
|
Today is a no-alcohol day for THB, and his tea comes with a little pastry |
We meet in the lobby around 6:30pm,
share drinks and snacks and then, in order to fight off jet lag, we wave goodbye
to them as they head off into the rain for dinner. We head upstairs recognizing
that braving one torrential downpour in a day is plenty.
We’ll meet up in the Jakarta airport in
the wee hours of the night two days from now.
