A spectacular sun rise at the beach
Some damage at the beach, from the first big storm
The warning came after the first big storm
Homeowners,
An evacuation Warning has been issued for the Monterey Dunes Colony. A large amount of water is headed for the Salinas river mouth and has the potential to overrun the levy {sic} bank. If this occurs, the old Salinas River and the fields to our east can flood. This could potentially cover Monterey Dunes Way where it crosses the Old Salinas River and close our only exit. Water is not expected to flood the Colony itself, just the lowlying areas around us. This is not an Evacuation ORDER at this time, but please prepare yourself if you have to leave quickly. The risk is serious enough that the Monterey County Sherriffs office has placed four National Guardsmen and two high water vehicles at the clubhouse. We are ready to go door-to-door if the order is given.
The boardwalk is moved around after the first big incursion/breach occurred
The planting in late November is doing well
The barriers are being put back out in mid January
The boardwalk is strewn all over the dunes. The shot below shows in the background how the waves moved sand into the lagoon to the south of MDC. There is a video of the surge going over the foredunes of the lagoon and crashing into the back side...with force! THB may be able to post it after the upcoming trip
In this pic below you can see how sand was washed right up to these units. Several units had water touch the foundations - no damage - and the covers were swept off the septic tanks at the south end, again with no damage
The breach shows as these fore-dunes flooded
Deer are great swimmers, not clear where this lone ranger came from
Mid-January THB and DB installed another floor cloth by Patty Dreher:
Also mid-January, the twins during a break in the weather to visit their local park: THE SUN is out!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, the Dunes sure got hammered! That old barge must have lost a few more bits and pieces too.
