Day 1: E-ville to Miami, #THBvisitsparkNo48

Day 1: E-ville to Miami

HFOTD (History Factoids of the Day)

1997 World Series Champs
1997 Champs
The Marlins became the first wild card team to ever win the Series, in only their fifth season.

2003 World Series Champs The  Florida Marlins defeat the New York Yankees four games to two. A staff with Josh Beckett (pitched no-hitter on May 25, 2014) and A.J. Burnett (losing pitcher of no-hitter on May 25), the Florida Marlins defeated the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and Yankees en route to franchise's second world championship.

Weather: Dark in E-ville; grey, drizzly and humid in Miami

THB and LB are on the road, tracking down new ballparks.

First, an appetizer or two before the trip starts:

Thursday, May 29, O.Co

Is this the best player in the game today?
Where's Mike? Is he the best player in the game today (June 1 at O.Co)?

Or is it this guy, 3B for the A's

What is Mike doing in the stands, THB came to see the best go mano a mano

A long early morning (real early, THB and LB left for the airport before 4:30am for a 6:15 departure). As usual, there are only two things wrong: the flight is around 45 minutes late leaving because of mechanical errors (really? after we left for airport at 4:20am?) and the light over THB's seat doesn't illuminate reading material (THB switches into LB's seat and she gets stuck in middle).
Airport breakfast: Peets and Arizmendi

Upon arrival, THB realizes he has booked us on 10pm flights the next day to Atlanta, not quite in time to get to the game tomorrow (oops! THB chalks it up to pre-stent efforts, and will charge the airline change fee off to incompetency and maybe see if Medicare covers it)

Check-in at the Courtyard Miami Airport, a short ride from the Marlins new ballpark.

Richie the Marriott shuttle driver shuttles us to/from Marlins Park for a small gratuity.

The Marlins score 3 runs in first and hold on for a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. We sit amongst Rays fans, behind the visitor's dugout. THB and DB dine on excellent sandwiches and brewskies, $40.

In the Daze before mini-ballpark tour

First up: what's happening on the old Bay Bridge deconstruction

Tearing down the old Bay Bridge

Ooops, something is missing

Yep, gone!

Front row seats, complete with lunch

THB goes olallieberry picking in Watsonville, a tradition for over 25 years; we used to go to a spot north of Santa Cruz before discovering Gizdich Ranch.

THB and DB's favorite sandwich spot, in Castroville, the Trolley Car. They also do excellent roti chicken and a very good pasta special at dinner. Family run, extremely friendly and accommodating; they provided tri-tip at K&E's pre-wedding dinner.

THB's favorite: brisket sandwich with jicama cole slaw

Yes, the TrolleyCar is in an old trolley from the Key System
There has been a surge in dead or dying sea lions washing up on the beaches of Monterey Bay this winter and spring. Theory: there is a large red tide (algai bloom) and the food chain is affected up the line. A sluggish sea lion was reported out front of the beach house (if they are up on the beach here, there's something wrong).

Here in pictures (and in video if THB can load it) is the rescue team in action.

the puppy is reluctant to go in his crate

And, here's the video (THB is crossing his flippers)…sorry, didn't load. I need to consult my blog expert, the Macinator.

Your Video Here: Tried two different ways, will have to get to it later

Success, and hopefully revival for the sea lion

THB and DB go to the Castroville Artichoke Festival at the Monterey County Fairgrounds (sort of like the LA Angels of Anaheim?). The big event: a tour of artichokes fields (which turn out to be right behind the beach house).

THB and DB get a ride to the field just like the real workers

What is this device? Yep, you got it! A month catcher counter
