Day 1: New York, April 17, 2012

Day 1: E-ville to New York

Weather:
Warm! High 60s, no breeze

The correct hotel, Ruay’s Thai Restaurant

Flight has some minor adjustments: somewhere in the day before departure , United switches planes to a larger layout, and somehow we lose our premium economy seats, so THB picks new seats when logging on to get boarding passes, and now we’re in the exit row, two aisle seats, and we end up with a huge amount of leg room and nobody in the middle seats. That’s a fortuitous upgrade!

United then gets us to Kennedy an hour early, and THB shaves some of that savings off by having the cab take us to the wrong Affinia (about 5 minutes apart). Cab to hotel (very reasonable flat fee of $45, plus bridge and tip), $60. Cab to correct hotel, $9.

The room is fabulous, good move on finding the right Affinia! Big living room and bedroom, small kitchenette. Somewhere around $350/night, varies by day of week. Internet is $14/day or $63/week (free in the 20sq foot lobby).

Dinner at Ruay Thai, couple blocks from the correct hotel: summer rolls and flat noodles with duck, $26. Ruay’s does not have a liquor license, so we bought a bottle of sauvignon blanc around the corner, $18. Turns out they got advice from the attorney that they shouldn’t allow BYOB to be served while awaiting their license. Hmmmm…maybe the attorney is a teetotaler.
