Antarctica and other spots, a special feature: Pablo Neruda's house

More pics about ships and hotels and zodiac rids and one house

Sylvia Earle

comfy observation lounge
lecture room: not very well designed since the pillars cut off view of the front of the room and the three display screens are thus pretty small
bar/lounge just outside the lecture room

this excursion almost ended poorly

The zodiacs wended between "islands" or in and out of fjords, at one point separated

now the four zodiacs came together and someonne actually suggested shifting people around so some could continue exploring and others go back to the Sylvia Earle. At this point though it looks calm  it was actually pretty rough, large swells, and no way people were going to be safe shifting zodiacs
cooler (almost frozen) heads skipped this idea and we headed back to the Sylvia Earle

Near the end of the cruise, THB and DB found ourselves in a spot we had been before in 2018: Deception Island

Calm in the lagoon

THB thinks this is sunrise, taken from the Delta lounge in SFO before trip starts
Jan 26, well into the snow season and before the next 5-6 weeks of even more snow

sunset in Atlanta on the first day of the trip

Singular Hotel Santiago: the double room suite is lovely and deeply flawed.. It is on the 8th floor and you could hear the music in both rooms coming from the 9th floor bar. pool and outdoor dining area. The sewer smell was obvious at times. The safe needed the safe whisperer to show up 8+ hours later to show us how to work it. Not good on jet lag. THB and DB were spending our last night of the trip in the same room: we told them we weren't staying on the 8th floor, they had to move us to anothr floor.

Look closely at this room

and this one, the companion to the suite

breakfast included

The safe that gave us trouble. Remember we asked to be given a room on a different floor, which likely would've meant a downgrade and refund. The Singular is on top of their game. It turns out they have the dientical set-up of a two room suite on the 7th floor. Deja vu!! All the same furntiure, etc., and all THB can surmise is that they moved everything from 8 to 7. No refund! And, just like the first time on 8, the keys for the rooms on 7 don't work. Were we surprised? Guess they didn't move all the doors frtom 8 to 7.

SA and DA attiver later on Day 2 and we have dinner on the deck (9th floor)

maintenance arrives to fix the sewer smell...in the ceiling!!
the building across the street has round windows
The Singular has round windows....in the toilet area
Murals in Santiago

The Almasur is the hotel "comparable" to the hotel THB and DB and DA and SA were to stay in...well, actually it was the only one inn Punta Arenas that had space for those arriving a day ahead for the flight to King George Island

the entire room, THB is standing in front of the only window, it faces a wall. not comparable at all

Tariz, small place in Puntas Arenas for early dinner

the comparable hotel is full and we hear a great story: someon had been here 10 days ago and the a/c is on the blink. We get into our room after midnight and there is a fan in the middle of the room: the a/c control says it is in the high 80s in our room. Maybe they don't have a/c, just heaters for the long winters (and no guests)
Aurora is having our pre-cruise meeting at the hotel...where we learn that the chances of the flight tomorrow are between zero and .5 % chance of going. Hmmmm...can that math be right?

Good News:mwe make it KGI and onto the ship as scheduled. Our cabin is on the top floor and bigger than the room at the Almasur

Even the closet is bigger than the room at the Almasur
Uh Oh! The computer screen is off one of the hinges. Note: THB is doing this post on the same machine, it has lasted another 5+ weeks. Shocking!

Hot tub is on our floor...OUTDOORS!!!

Gym is on our floor...THB makes it a grand total of ... Two (2) times.

THB and DB are in the mudroom getting "dressed" for our first excursion. This is a great feature. The  guy in the red jacket is scanning us off the ship...our lockers are right nexty to his station
It is hard to see, the landing is right center and you walk up a very narrow stone staircase to the post office. Very scary!! We get help (because we asked) for the descent. After the cruise we came to realize the expedition team was made of very inexperienced staff, some only on board for a month. The talks are hard to understand (English is often not a first language) and the attentiveness to the cruisers was way below our 2018 experience. However, the  "hotel" staff was wonderful.
THB and DB visit the post office with it's unusual murals and maybe THB sends a letter...he can't remember...Covid brain?

Nephew BH is showing us the sights on our last day in Chile. First up: a walk-through of Pablo Neruda's local-to-nearby-Santiago resicence of the famous poet and activitist.

No pics allowed inside the house. It is pretty jammed with his various collections...very fascinating
Is Pablo here? Bh thinks his body may be here, there is of course controversy as to where he is buried

Back at SFO, the trip is over
run Rickey run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
