Day 7: Namaqualand, Wednesday, Sept 3

Day 7: Namaqualand, Wednesday, Sept 3

QOTD:
They tell me that our brothers over there
Refuse to work in the mines.
They may not get the news but they need to know
We're on their side.

Weather: Cool in morning, comfortable with some cloud cover in morning
Unclear on the concept? Church or synagogue?

Same-same: walk before breakfast and for breakfast the same, and then a revelation: there’s wifi on the veranda. Out come computers and i-pads and e-mail is disposed of and sports scores perused.
Former synagogue, now a museum

Not many good utility boxes, some great electrical panels

We’re off at 9 for Springbok, around an hour north of Karmieskroon. Stops at a synagogue converted to a local museum, for tea at the Springbok Lodge Familie Restaurant (didn’t we just have breakfast?) of a shared lightly branned muffin (Alex encourages us to share though we can have "as much as we like") and tea.

"Art-y"

And then another drive around the area to visit Boer War sites (unmarked except for the cemetery; Alex relates the history), and a visit to a mining museum in Nababeep (one of THB’s all time favorite town names, though he may be throwing an extra syllable or two in there….nahBAHBAHbeeeep?).

THB's entry for model of the year

Another great electrical panel

Then the big event of the day, picnic lunch and touring in the Goegap Nature Preserve. More spectacular flowers and vistas, baboon sightings (no pics), springbok (pics), mine tailings (pics), flowers (many, many pics), and videos of tour members taking videos. No drones...

Picnic lunch spot

DB's greatest fear...and lots of them!

Back around 5pm to shower, pack, and get ready for the nightly quiz. DB does very well, getting several answers right, THB appoints her the night’s winner.

Dinner the usual, accompanied with a Namaqua merlot, $6, and not as good as the pinotage. Puddings are cakes tonight, and trifle appears to be trifle, and the ice cream is cold and white.
