Day 9: Cape Town, Friday, Sept 5
QOTD:
Sister have you heard
'Bout Johannesburg?
FOTD: In the last month, THB has seen and smelled the following major bodies of water: Norwegian Sea, North and South Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, San Francisco Bay, and Lake Merritt (seems major to a long-time East Bay resident, and smells!).
Weather: Overcast in the morning, clearing in the afternoon, pleasant
Today we get to sleep in….OOPS, we don’t! Even though we got to bed around 11pm, the plan is to pick up the car by 8:30 and head up the aerialway cable to the top of Table Mountain for the early morning views (supposed to be better than afternoons because haze sets in).
Budget's finest |
The car is a bit of shuffle: the one reserved does not have an enclosed trunk of a good cover for bags so we switch to a four door sedan with indoor trunk.
At that point, we can see Table Mountain is totally clouded over, so we switch to Plan B, driving down to near the lowest point on the continent, Cape Point, where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.
This is the best Plan B ever executed, by far!!! Penguins, baboons, whales, gorgeous coastlines, turquoise coves, a great fish and chips spot, AND a visit to near the southernmost point on the African continent (no word on where the southernmost Starbucks is located, unlike in NZ where THB reported and sent pics out). Magical, and D did all the driving: good thing since it is righthand drive and a stick shift and THB had half a beer with lunch.
Back to hotel by 5pm, decide to go low key and eat at Breakwater where we get free drinks: two buffets, one giant salad for DB, a mezze (too salty) for M, one glass of sauvignon blanc, $55.
Pics, and more pics, followed by pics...
And a ciabatta to-go |
Rock hyrax |
The Salty Dog: best fish and chips on the trip! |
Kingklip turns out to be a great fish |
So big THB and DB share...maybe THB was being too generous? |
From the near bottom of Africa:
Indian, meet Atlantic; Atlantic, meet Indian |
THB, meet DB |
D, meet M |
D and M, meet DB |
D and M and DB, meet THB |
