Alaska Day 10: Safari Explorer

Day 10: Safari Explorer

Weather Report: Overcast most of the day, temps in the 50s, maybe low 60s

Quote of the Day: We’re moving on…some of you may have noticed the boat pulled anchor during dinner and is exiting the fjord.

It’s a Covid world: THB and DB share a meal with another couple, the only ones from Alaska. They live in Anchorage. THB and DB know one person who lives in Alaska, she lives in Homer (not big enough to be called a city, maybe not even a town). The couple knows the one person we know, they know her well. One degree of separation. We’re hoping to see Rika during week 3 (and try and remember the names of the couple we met on the cruise). Ed. note: THB is running out of “It’s a covid world” events. He has gone on to any story that seems remotely blog worthy (not the same thing as interesting, noteworthy, or even oddly historical in nature)

THB did not turn on the black and white filter for the next three pics...

The usual: up early for pastry and coffee, a gorgeous kayak on our own in the morning, another good lunch (tomato soup and either grilled cheese sandwich or a BLTA sandwich), a great skiff ride in the afternoon, another terrific dinner (scallops or polenta and ratatouille) and EL comes out to give us an idea of tomorrow’s activities. During dinner the ship pulled up anchor and chugs out of the fjord. EL says nothing about why the ship has pulled up anchor and chugged out of the fjord.

THB is fantasizing the grandkids’ reaction: But why, pop-pop, but why….?

THB's cabin is the one with two sets of windows on the top deck

C, a surgeon, is ready for kayaking. Note two water bottles tucked into life jacket, camo, binocs

One driver, two skiffs

Selfie, THB is wearing a swoop over most of his face, dark glasses, black hat, incognito!

Tundra swan

Mergansers

Bald eagle, the most common large bird THB sees on the trip

THB and DB skip the evening session, an i-phone photography hints and tips session. It’s a great idea because most of the passengers are having terrible separation anxiety as there is pretty much no cell reception. This way they can enjoy the feel of their phones in a useful purpose (especially if they brought real cameras and put away the i-phones altogether).
