Kona Hawaii, Day 1 and 2

Department ot Transportation: Uber to the airport, everybody masked. Head to the United gate. Sure enough, the furthest from TSA entrance. Get there, and have to go back 3 gates to get our wristbands, supplied by Hawaii Safe Travels. Here is THB's QR code.

THB's code is small and yellow, DB's large and green. THB called tech support 3 weeks ago and was told that the scanners at the airport would be able to handle the small QR code

We're early, no problema. OOOS! The guy at the Hawaii Safe Travels desk cannot scan THB's QR code. DB pulls out her I-Pad, takes a picture of THB's vax record card he keeps in his wallet, uploads it to THB's Hawaii Safe Travel, back to get scanned and

Timing is everything: in a few days Hawaii is going to remove their travel and mask restrictions and the need for the Safe Travels site goes away. Will it be safer here?

THB's airplane lunch is a hybrid: leftover roti-truck porchetta on great bread and  roti potatoes and airplane slaw
The first sight of Big Island
The way to double-mask?

A very rare pic: inside a Hertz van. The flight is 25 minutes early and Hertz is grossly understaffed and only one van is running - bankruptcy related? We are now behind scheduled arrival at hotel

The clerk tells THB: your card may be "hot" as it is metal (or because of something else?)
Fresh out of the shower: even the Hertz guy couldn't open the trunk with the key

Mauna Lani Auberge

Fruit and champagne greeting on the deck

Room 516 is somewhere in this pic, looking northwest
The bar shares a kitchen with the sit-down open air Halani restaurant

Fish tacos and margherita pizza, 2 drinks, $110...upper reaches of resort pricing

Day 2:  Mauna Lani

The sunrise
Two decaf au laits, one almond croissant $22 at the "market" downstairs
The best way to confuse THB: the Lobby is really floors 2 and 3

The closest mall (2 minutes from hotel) is pretty much shut down. This is one of the few businesses open - pizza only, opens at 11am
The hotel rents snorkel masks by the hour! Fins free. THB and DB go to Snorkel Bob and rent a set each for the week (figuring we'll always have a mask that fits on hand), each pair is $54 for 7 days
THB is trying  out his new sun guard, complete with hoodie
The grounds are loaded with ponds; this one features turtles and sharks

Not an ice cream truck, beach towels
Dinner at the fancy restaurant on the grounds: Canoe House. Gets totally booked for the first seating (sunset) and DB and THB have an obstructed view (sounds like THB's seats at a World Series game). In any case, works in our favor because sun is not glaring in our eyes and we shift around to see a non-event: the sun setting into the marine layer

Hay smoked and seared kampachi: the smoking
Local beef and foie gras gyoza
The scorching

The menu says shrimps with heads. Somehow the kitchen misplaced the heads tonight
The i-phone camera cannot counteract THB's shaky hands on every pic. With one cocktail and one glass of sake and one ice tea (it's a metho day) $235

Earth to Quality Control, we have a problem...who sold THB an i-phone?

Book Review:

Memoirs Of A Fortunate Jew, Dan Vittorio Segre (pub’d 1987): Segre was a totally assimilated Jewish child in the 1920s and 30s, living in rural luxury in Italy. At age 16, his father sent him to Palestine to live on a kibbutz and escape the coming war. At 18, he joined the British Army and ended up in the Intelligence unit. Much is explained of the various allegiances and contradictions of the individuals involved in this beautifully and intelligently told coming of age story. Can a Jew be a Fascist? If he lives in Italy he can. Highly Recommended
