Day 6:
Acadia National Park
Quote of the day: When I go to a bar, I
don't go looking for a girl who knows the capital of Maine.
Weather:
Blustery, 60s, sun, THB is back in shorts (9am yesterday morning in
Stowe: 37; tonight at 8pm in Bar Harbor: mid 60s)
Pics: Sunrise at BH Inn,
Acadia National Park, Watermark Restaurant for lunch
Amazingly, we again
sleep in past sunrise. Supposedly, that means a) the sun was out today
(unusual) and b) we missed seeing the earliest spot on US continent to get sun
in the morning.
Breakfast (included)
is a full cold buffet, so we have cinnamon toast, toasted bagel, coffee and
cereal with yogurt.
At ANP around 9am,
start the Goreham Mountain trail at Sand Beach (remember, finding the TH –
Trail Head – is the hardest part of the hike for B – Bob). Not quite two hours
later, we’re back at the car, having climbed the heights (all 526 feet of
Goreham Mountain) and come back again to sea level. Gorgeous; we’ve finally hit
it just right, it appears that fall has just come to this part of New England
after having already vacated most other parts of the region. Phew!
Lunch outside the
Park in Northeast Harbor at Watermark, the best spot in town. And, the only
spot in town open, as most retail has closed for the winter already. Lobster
(half) roll with herb fries for DB, Louis with lobster and shrimp and the
majority of the fries for THB, iced tea, $42.
Back into the Park to
complete the loop road and a stop on top of Cadillac Mountain where if you can
brave the massive winds (50mph and up,
the strongest we’ve felt since almost getting blown off a ridge in Patagonia)
and get up early enough, you can see the sun before all other Americans getting
up in their homeland.
Dinner at Café This
Way (in an alley off the main square): local brew, two glasses of NZ sauvignon
blanc, Caesar salad with the largest parmesan crouton ever made (2!), mixed
green salad, Moroccan squash veggie dish, rare lamb sirloin with smashed squash
and grilled sweet potato, $91 and terrific. Also came with a tip on a local
bakery…stay tuned for tomorrow’s posting.
