Day 13: S Georgia Island, Gold Harbour and Cooper Bay

Day 13: S Georgia Island, Gold Harbour and Cooper Bay

Weather: Cold, snowing and THB and DB both hit the chill wall, then very pleasant for 2nd excursion

Quote of The Day:  Do we want to go on another Zodiac cruise?

Another early wake-up and the usual: staff needs to explore the expedition site before deciding how we’ll be approaching land and kayaking may or may not be on this morning. During breakfast it is announced that there is too much animal life ashore because male elephant seals are staking out mating territories and it is too dangerous for us to land ashore. And kayaking is off as well.

Into Zodiacs we go, 7 to a boat. And, sure enough, the shore for about a mile is solid elephant seals and King Penguins. There really is no place we could land and walk, none. And, it is snowing. And cold. And THB has managed to get suntan lotion in his left eye. True story….what the hell is THB doing applying suntan lotion in a snow storm? It’s because if THB does not put on suntan lotion he has a nice circular sunburn in the middle of his face, the only part of his body exposed during the expeditions.

An hour is enough for THB and DB. Unfortunately, the Zodiac ride lasts an hour and half.

Lunch on the deck: THB has an appetite, eats 1 ½ burritos accompanied by Diet Coke. THB and DB are on our balcony, discussing whether to go on 2nd excursin at Coopers Bay. Sophie, one of our three kayaker staff, leans over from the top deck where the kayaks and Zodiacs are stored and lets us know that kayak is on for the afternoon.

The kayaking is superb! Calm and flat, plenty to see, and we’re on the water for almost 2 hours. We board the kayaks from the Zodiacs, a bit easier than on a steep beach or boat launch. THB applies sunscreen to no avail as he returns with a bright red circle on his face. The rest of ship does Zodiac cruising.

Pics from Copper Bay:

By the time we’ve showed and attended the daily review and debrief, THB is starting to feel knocked out. Could be from the patch we’ve applied (we took a 3-4 day break), too much sun, or just the periodic rolling motion of the ship. Whatever, we have drinks in our room with another couple and the three of them head to dinner, THB has a lie-down instead.
