Day 24: Ushuaia to Buenos Aires

THB's camera bag

Day 24: Ushuaia to Buenos Aires

Ushuaia

Weather: Chilly in Ushuaia, very pleasant in BA

Quote of The Day:  Are there icebergs in BA?

Department of Icebergs: A loyal follower, THB’s b’day twin, sent the following definition

To be classified as an iceberg, the height of the ice must be greater than
16 feet above sea level and the thickness must be 98-164 feet and the ice
must cover an area of at least 5,382 square feet.

There are smaller pieces of ice known as “bergy bits” and “growlers.”
Bergy bits and growlers can originate from glaciers or shelf ice, and may
also be the result of a large iceberg that has broken up. A bergy bit is a
medium to large fragment of ice. Its height is generally greater than
three feet but less than 16 feet above sea level and its area is normally
about 1,076-3,229 square feet. Growlers are smaller fragments of ice and
are roughly the size of a truck or grand piano. They extend less than
three feet above the sea surface and occupy an area of about 215 square
feet.

Icebergs are also classified by shape, most commonly being either tabular
or non-tabular. Tabular icebergs have steep sides and a flat top.
Non-tabular icebergs have different shapes, with domes and spires.

Icebergs are monitored worldwide by the U.S. National Ice Center (NIC).
NIC produces analyses and forecasts of Arctic, Antarctic, Great Lakes, and
Chesapeake Bay ice conditions. NIC is the only organization that names and
tracks all Antarctic Icebergs.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program

Shrine just to left of jetway entrance: a "sign" of things to come?

Not THB's camera bag

We opt (mostly at THB’s urging) to go from HebSky to the airport on the very early side, leaving us 4.5 hours to kill. Some opted to park their bags in a HebSky storage in Ushuaia and walk around.

The flight leaves 10 minutes early, very smooth for 3 hours, and our bags are some of the first off the plane. It’s a short cab ride from domestic airport to the Palacio Duhau (duo) Park Hyatt, $14 with tip, and we’ve have landed in a 17th floor penthouse suite (upgrade for booking through AMEX) that is quite a shock after the 3 weeks in a nice cabin aboard the HebSky.

Room 1707, Palacio Duhau

Our bags for the night, suitcases are packed as if we're not going to need anything else for the 1 day in BA

Argentinian 3 prong plug in bedroom

US two prong plug at desk in living room

Across the street, dinner on the deck

First sighting of moon in over 3 weeks...

The Duhau is just down the street from the apartment we rented with A&S around 10 years ago. We probably walked by this place 15 or 20 times, never imagining we’d be staying here some day. THB even remembers walking by when there was a swarm of teenage girls outside the hotel: we guessed some boy band was staying here.

Inside the Duhau, wedding photo shoot?

Maybe the entrance to our apartment years ago

Oviedo

Atun

We walk slowly to dinner at Oviedo, a place THB remembered very fondly from 10 years ago.  You can’t go home again, dinner is not as good as THB remembers. Shared salad, tuna and suckling pig, $100 with bottle of Malbec and a generous tip. Lots of post-trip discussion. Nice slow walk back to Palacio Duhau.

Worth a second look

    1. When we landed I said to DB that the parks around the airport were exceptionally empty on a Saturday afternoon. Sure enough, it was right when the game should've started...now maybe never to be played in BA!
